Freyssinet Group companies DGI-Menard and Menard of France joined forces to install Controlled Modulus Columns (CMC) and Prefabricated Vertical Drains (Wick Drains) for the support of a highway embankment constructed over a mangrove swamp on the island of Jamaica. To meet the tight schedule, the two companies simultaneously installed 1.5 million meters of Prefabricated Vertical Drains (Wick Drains) and 135,000 meters of CMCs.

Frederic Masse, Vice President of Engineering and a native of France, joined DGI-Menard following the merger of DGI and Menard Soiltreatment, Inc., the US affiliate of Menard, one of the world's leading specialized ground improvement contractors. Before the merger, Frederic was with Menard and its subsidiaries for eight years. His last position was as the executive vice president of Sangjee Menard Co. Ltd. in South Korea and Far East regional manager for Menard.

Because of his worldwide experience, Frederic is one of DGI-Menard's greatest assets in working on international projects, like Highway 2000 in Jamaica. With an MS in Civil Engineering and Soil Mechanics, Frederic has extensive experience in technical research on new technologies for soil improvement. At DGI-Menard he manages the engineering and design on all major ground improvement projects.

Support of MSE Walls and Reinforced Embankments Using Ground Improvement

This paper, written jointly by DGI-Menard and The Reinforced Earth Company and recently presented in Japan by Roger Bloomfield, president of The Reinforced Earth Company, discusses the use of Controlled Modulus Columns (CMC) as an ideal solution for the support of MSE walls, steepened slopes and conventional embankments.
