Pioneers In Ground Improvement
Our History
Since our inception, the cornerstone of Menard has been innovation. Our founder, Louis Menard, invented the pressuremeter and developed dynamic compaction. Since then, the company has continued to innovate by inventing such solutions as Menard Vacuum™ consolidation, Controlled Modulus Columns (CMC)® rigid inclusions and Bi-Modulus Columns (BMC)®.
In the United States, we’re continuing the tradition of innovation. We revolutionized the U.S. ground improvement industry in 2003 by being the first company to install CMCs. And in 2020, we installed the deepest CMC’s in the world at 172 feet. Read more about our company history and some of our iconic projects on the timeline below.

1954
1954 - INVENTION OF THE PRESSUREMETER
It all started in 1954, when Louis Ménard, a young French mechanical engineering student from Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées, invented the device that was to revolutionize geotechnical investigations: the pressuremeter.
Until the 1950s, there was no practical way to determine the geotechnical parameters required for the design of foundations using in-situ methods.
Louis Ménard set a goal of devising a single in-situ test to measure the ultimate pressure of the soil and its deformation modulus in order to calculate bearing capacity and settlement. He developed and filed a patent for the device that was to revolutionize geotechnical investigations: the pressuremeter. -
1957
1957 - CREATION OF THE COMPANY “LES PRESSIOMÉTRES MENARD”
In 1957, Louis Menard set up a company called “Les Pressiomètres Menard” (Menard Pressuremeters). Success was quick to follow and he soon had four licensees using his devices. The French Laboratoire Central des Ponts et Chaussées (Central Civil Engineering Laboratory) also began to use his equipment.
